What is Stamp Duty?

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is a tax you may pay when you buy a residential (or non-residential) property or land in England or Northern Ireland. Scotland and Wales have their own taxes: LBTT and LTT.

Who pays Stamp Duty?

Usually the buyer. You pay SDLT when you purchase a property or land above certain price thresholds. Different rates apply for your main home, a second home, first-time buyers, and non-UK residents.

When is it paid?

You must file an SDLT return and pay the tax within 14 days of completion (in England and NI). Your conveyancer or solicitor typically handles this.
